Grain free dog food is often the first thing owners try when a dog shows signs of a food sensitivity, such as loose stools, excess wind, itchy skin or recurring ear trouble. Our grain free recipes are built around freshly prepared meat and fish ingredients, using easily digestible carbohydrate sources like potato and sweet potato in place of grains, with no wheat, dairy or soya. True food allergies in dogs are rare, affecting somewhere around 0.2% to 2% of them. Most cases are sensitivities rather than allergies, and these tend to settle down when meals are predictable, the ingredient list is short, and any new food is introduced slowly over seven to 10 days. If you want to strip things back further, our Just 6 recipes use only six key ingredients each, with one main meat or fish ingredient per recipe. Our Superfoods recipes are grain free too, in both dry and wet, with added spinach, sweet potato and seaweed. Is Harringtons dog food grain free?

Some of it is. All Harringtons wet dog food recipes are grain free, along with our grain free, Superfoods and Just 6 food ranges. Our core dry food recipes do contain grains such as rice, so it's always worth checking the pack or ingredients list on the product page if you're unsure.

What replaces the grain in grain free dog food?

Something else that does the same job. Dogs still need carbohydrate for energy, so grain free does not mean carbohydrate free, it means the carbohydrate comes from a different place. Ours comes from vegetables rather than cereals, which is also why you will see potato and sweet potato high up the ingredients list.

What is the difference between grain free and hypoallergenic?

Grain free describes what has been left out, which is grains. Hypoallergenic describes a recipe made to be less likely to trigger a reaction, usually by keeping the ingredient list short and predictable. A recipe can be one, the other or both. Our grain free recipes are carefully made to be hypoallergenic as well.

Is grain free dog food better for my dog?

It depends on the dog rather than the label. Grains are not a problem for most dogs, and no single ingredient is just padding, so we would not tell you your dog needs grain free as a matter of course. Where it earns its place is when you are working through a suspected sensitivity and want to change one thing at a time, or simply when your dog does better on it. Some do.

Is grain free dog food linked to heart problems?

You may have seen this raised. As of 2024 the US Food and Drug Administration has not found a proven causal link between grain free diets and dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition where the heart muscle weakens, and describes the picture as complex. Where there has been a signal it pointed towards diets very high in pulses and legumes such as peas and lentils, rather than the absence of grain itself. What pack sizes does grain free dog food come in?

Dry recipes come in a small bag for trying a flavour and a large bag for everyday feeding, and wet food comes in trays, either as a selection pack or a box of a single flavour. As a rough guide, buy the biggest bag your dog will get through in about six weeks, so the food stays fresh once opened. Exact sizes are on each product page.
