There are lots of ways you can help keep your dog cool in the warmer summer months. As well as providing plenty of cool, clean water, and creating shady spots for them to relax in, you can also make some tasty frozen treats! Here are some of our favourite dog-friendly ‘pupsicle’ recipes for you to try:
Frozen 'Pupsicles'
With a range of flavour options, these are a great way to use up ingredients like fresh fruit and make some tasty treats that both you and your pooch can enjoy together! As they use people-friendly ingredients, they make great treats for you and your four-legged friend.
Top tip: avoid using popsicle sticks in your dog’s pupsicle as they can be a choking hazard - keep the sticks for your snack, and out of theirs.
Berry flavour
Pop one cup of strawberries, one cup of blueberries and one cup of raspberries into a blender with 400g of greek yoghurt and one tablespoon of honey. Blend until smooth and then pour into ice lolly moulds, remembering only to put popsicle sticks into the ones you’re serving to people. Freeze for 2-3 hours and then they’re ready to serve!
Banana and peanut butter flavour
Blitz a banana, 400g of greek yogurt, one tablespoon of honey and two tablespoons of natural peanut butter (xylitol is a sweetener sometimes found in peanut butter which is toxic to dogs) in a blender until smooth. Pour the mixture into ice lolly trays and place popsicle sticks in the ones for people, then freeze for 2-3 hours. Then they’re ready to eat!
Strawberry and banana flavour
Blend one banana and one cup of strawberries with 400g of greek yogurt and one tablespoon of honey. Once smooth, pour the mixture into the trays and insert the popsicle sticks into the human-designated lollies, leaving the dog’s ones stick-free. Freeze for 2-3 hours and then enjoy!
If you don’t have a popsicle tray, an ice cube tray will do just fine when making frozen treats for your pooch. You can make them extra special by using bone-shaped trays! For more tips and tricks on keeping your dog cool over summer, check out our latest blog.
Although these treats are super tasty, be sure your pooch doesn’t overindulge, one a day is plenty! It’s important to make sure your dog is getting a nutritious, balanced diet and maintains a healthy weight.
